What adult makes decisions in their life equipped only with knowledge that they learned in elementary school?

We need to regularly learn more about our faith in order to be able to deal with all life's complexities. In our childhood we receive the gift of our parents' faith. Questioning our childhood view of God and faith is necessary to arrive at an adult faith - "faith by choice."

Growth in faith is lifelong and does not end upon reaching adulthood.

§43, Catechesi Tradendae, Apostolic Exhortation of Pope John Paul II, 1979

A living faith is a searching faith - it "seeks understanding." Adults need to question, probe, and critically reflect on the meaning of God's revelation in their unique lives in order to grow closer to God.

§158, Catechism of the Catholic Church (citing St. Anselm), U.S. Catholic Conference, 2000

"The maturation of the Christian life requires that it be cultivated in all its dimensions: knowledge of the faith, liturgical life, moral formation, prayer, belonging to community, and missionary spirit."

§87, cf. §84-86, General Directory for Catechesis, U.S. Catholic Conference, 1998
