Sacred Scripture in the Life of the Church
The Catechism of the Catholic Church offers several compelling reasons why it is so important for Catholics to explore the faith through bible study:

CCC 131 "And such is the force and power of the Word of God that it can serve the Church as her support and vigor and the children of the Church as strength for their faith, food for the soul, and a pure and lasting font of spiritual life." Hence "access to Sacred Scripture ought to be open wide to the Christian faithful."

CCC 132 "Therefore, the ëstudy of the sacred page' should be the very soul of sacred theology. The ministry of the Word, tooópastoral preaching, catechetics, and all forms of Christian instruction, among which the liturgical homily should hold pride of placeóis healthily nourished and thrives in holiness through the Word of Scripture."

CCC 133 The Church "forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful . . . to learn ëthe surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ,' by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. ëIgnorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.'"
Sacred Scripture in the Life of our Parish

Do you wish that you knew more about the Bible and the things that Jesus and the Apostles did back in the first century?

Do you have a hunger for God but are unsure of how to become closer to Him?

Do you strive to be a person who is known for spiritual knowledge?

Do you want to have 10 or more new Catholic friends who will pray for and with you?

Our daytime and evening home Bible studies meet monthly or bi-monthly in a parishioner's home or on our campus and dig into the Scriptures at a grass roots level. We offer women's only and mixed gender groups that all share the goal of learning more about God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Our Bible study leaders have all received specific training on how to make the Scriptures come alive and make it easy for you to understand.

Sacred Scripture in Your Life

Why join a Bible Study in addition to personal Scripture meditation? As Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

When we read the Word of God, it brings us closer to God. However, when we discuss and delve into the Word as a group, we can become more filled with the Spirit in a fellowship of sharing with others. Studying the scriptures gives us a new or more profound understanding of the Bible and how we are to live as Catholic Christians.

There are over a dozen Bible study groups at St. John the Evangelist with nearly 200 adults regularly participating. You do not have to be a member of our parish to join our groups.

I just wanted to share with you my experience yesterday. Since I've been reading my Daily Catholic Bible I've been struggling with the Old Testament readings a bit, not thinking that I am really getting "it" or getting much out of them. I attended a wedding Saturday and one of readings was from Tobit. I was with the same group of people yesterday and we were discussing how the ceremony went and to my utter amazement I started telling the story of the Scripture Reading out of Tobit, filling in the details. Now for a minute I did not even know how I knew this information and then I remembered I'd read it the Daily Catholic Bible. Whoa! Little miracle here! Anyway, just wanted to share that with you.
