Music Ministry

The music ministry of St. John Evangelist is one of our most important liturgical contributions. Much time, talent, and treasure is spent in this area because we believe that what is experienced at our liturgies, of which music is an integral part, helps us live our lives as better Christian Catholics during the rest of the week.

Our Goal

No matter what group is leading the music, or what type of music is chosen for Mass, our goal remains the same: To enable the assembly, the gathered people who make up the church, to draw closer to Christ. We feel this is best done when they are able to participate in the music of the liturgy with their minds and their hearts. Therefore, every aspect of our music ministry is challenged by this goal - from the planning stages through the execution.

Adult Choir

Currently, our adult choir (geared for High School students and beyond) is our largest group of musicians. Our ministry is two-fold: to lead the assembly in worship and to enhance the liturgy through the singing of choral music.

We sing most music in SATB format, some traditional octavos mixed with more contemporary songs. Previous choral experience is helpful, but NOT necessary, as we are a friendly group that is welcoming and helpful to new members.

How to Get Involved

We rehearse on Wednesday evenings September through May from 7:00-9:00 pm in the church. We minister regularly at either the 7:30 am or 11:30 am Mass, based on the monthly liturgical calendar, and also at other special Holy Days and liturgies throughout the year. We also enjoy taking part in our Christmas and Easter season Music Ministry concerts, of which the choir plays a major role.

Come join us in praising our Lord in song!

Ensemble Musicians

Over the last several years, we have begun to put together ensembles of musicians to help lead music at masses when the choir isn't present. These ensembles vary in size and instrumentation, but usually consist of a keyboardist/organist, guitar, a cantor, several vocalists and one or more wind, brass, string or percussion instruments.

It is our priority to provide the best possible music to engage the assembly, so we may all better praise and worship our God. If you are competent in playing or singing in the style of an ensemble musician, then we invite you to prayerfully consider offering your talents to this ministry.

How to Get Involved

Our rehearsals normally take place following weekly choir rehearsals, on Wednesday evenings, beginning at 9:00 pm.

Contemporary Praise & Worship Band

Our Family Mass on Sunday mornings is blessed with the ministry of our Praise & Worship Band. Spirited songs are led with music and a signing ministry to help our youngest parishioners and their families enter into the Mass with full and joyous participation.

"The Band" also ministers at many liturgical events "on the road" - retreats, conferences, days of reflection, at camps, in hospitals and at other churches. Wherever the Lord calls, this group of musicians goes!

How to Get Involved

Balance is integral to this ensemble, and new members are added as musical needs arise.
