At St. John the Evangelist, we believe our children
need to know their Faith in order to love their Faith;
when they truly understand what our Faith is about,
they want to go out into the world and spread the good
news through words and deeds.
Students of all ages participate in programs to help
the needy. In addition, our middle school students take
part in many programs designed to reinforce Christ's
message of helping those less fortunate.

Question of Month
Is it mandatory to name children after saints?
Under the old Code of Canon Law (1919) it was required that every child presented for baptism have a Christian name. A Christian name was understood to be the name of a saint or Christian virtue or something similar. For example, Mary, Joseph, Faith, Charity, Hope, etc.
The present Code of Canon Law, in effect since 1983, states that a name not foreign to a Christian mentality is to be given at Baptism. What would be a name foreign to a Christian mentality? Something like Lucifer, Zeus or Satan would be the type of name that would invoke the Code's restrictions.
