I love my Guardian Angel! 💖 Devotion to my Guardian Angel is something that only became important to me again a couple of years ago—but now it’s here to stay! Looking back, I can see a few moments that stirred this renewal in me, and I’m so grateful.
Each morning, I begin my day with the Guardian Angel prayer. Along with offering myself to God—telling Him that I trust Him and desire Him to do with me what He wills—I ask my angel to be at my side: to light, to guard, to rule, and guide. That simple prayer helps me surrender to God in a real, practical way, trusting that my angel will help me stay open to God’s will throughout the day. And at night, I close my day with the same prayer, asking my angel to watch over me as I sleep.
When my five kids were little, we used to pray the Guardian Angel prayer together before bedtime. Over time, as they grew, that tradition faded away (something I regret). I even remember changing the prayer when they were young—leaving out “If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take”—because I worried it might frighten them. But in hindsight, what better thought could my children have had before bed than the hope of being carried by Our Lord to Heaven? Ah, the lessons we parents learn! Thankfully, God’s mercy and the grace of Confession always give us the chance to keep growing in faith. 🙏
My devotion to my Guardian Angel deepened again when I picked up Prayers to Save America from the Mantle of Mary project. That booklet reminded me of the powerful role angels play in God’s plan and how they fight alongside us in prayer. Around the same time, I began reading more booklets and stories about angels—how each of us receives one at birth, how they are our champions against the malice and rage of the devils, how profoundly they influence our daily lives if we let them, and how they will be our advocates at the judgment seat of God.
Our Guardian Angels bear great affection for us and take such care of our souls, that we should be enflamed with real love for them.
The life of Saint Padre Pio (Feast Day Sept. 23) has touched me deeply. He spoke to his Guardian Angel regularly, treating him like a trusted companion and friend, a buddy that he even played with. His angel wasn’t just a silent protector but an active helper, even serving as a translator for letters from around the world! And when the mail wasn’t quick enough, he would send his Guardian Angel with a direct response. For Saint Pio, his angel wasn’t distant—he was personal, intimate, and essential!
If you’ve never read Send Me Your Guardian Angel, by Fr. Alessio Parente, I highly recommend it. 📖 This small book beautifully captures Padre Pio’s relationship with his Guardian Angel and helps us see how we, too, can lean on ours for comfort, guidance, and strength.
So today, I invite you to renew your devotion—or begin it anew. Pray to your Guardian Angel in the morning and at night. Call upon this heavenly companion who has been faithfully by your side since the day you were born. Thank him for his intercession. You’ll find a new openness to God’s will and a deeper sense of peace knowing you are never, ever alone. 🌟
👼 ✨Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
And at night when you are praying for a peaceful sleep, add: “If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” 🙏 Amen!
