SPOTLIGHT: Consuelo "Chelo" Rocha

Among all the treasures of the faith, the Blessed Virgin Mary always held a special place in Consuelo’s heart. From a young age, she admired Our Lady’s tenderness, strength, and the immense sacrifice she made in her "yes" to God. “I cherish our Blessed Virgin Mary,” she says. Our Lady’s quiet courage became a guiding light for Consuelo, even when she didn’t realize it.

That was particularly true when, during the past few years, Chelo found herself facing challenges that left her feeling isolated, uncertain, and spiritually adrift. Our Blessed Mother was integral in helping Chelo get through this difficult season, as was St. John the Evangelist Parish (SJE), which became more than just the parish she had attended for some 15 years — it became her spiritual home. It was in the last three years that her heart reopened, and her commitment deepened. She found a renewed purpose and a community that wrapped its arms around her when she needed it.

SJE has given Chelo countless opportunities to draw closer to God and to serve others. One of the most transformative experiences has been her involvement with the Alpha program. Through Alpha, she discovered she wasn't alone in her questions, doubts, and struggles with faith. Sitting around the table, sharing meals and heartfelt conversations, Chelo encountered people whose stories mirrored her own — people walking the same road toward understanding and hope. Their openness and vulnerability inspired Chelo to keep going, even when her steps felt heavy.

Still, her journey didn’t stop there. Through Alpha, doors opened to other ministries that have deepened her walk with Christ. Chelo found joy in serving through the Ave Maria Hispanic Ministry and sharing the love of Our Lady of Guadeloupe with others. She connected with the beautiful, seasoned faith of the Boomers and Beyond group, and with the beautiful, passionate members of the Sacred Grounds Donut Team – who do so much more than provide food. With their creative gifts, they craft beautiful floral arrangements, sew elegant tablecloths, keep the Sacred Grounds spotless, and provide a heartfelt, tangible expression of love to all who gather in our Narthex

And Chelo’s heart was moved to go even farther – participating in missionary work in Omaha, Nebraska and Mexico City with Hope for the Poor, witnessing firsthand the face of Christ in the eyes of those SJE served.

Looking back, Chelo can see how the Blessed Virgin Mary and God were patiently, lovingly walking with her all along — just like the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Even when she didn't recognize Him, even when she felt lost, Jesus was there, guiding Chelo’s steps, stirring her heart and strengthening her faith life.

While Chelo’s story is still being written, and the steps are not always easy, one thing is certain – she does not walk alone.
