What is the significance of October 13?

This year it is a Monday and 🇺🇸 Columbus Day, but that is not the significance to which I am referring. It is the date 108 years ago that Our Lady of Fatima appeared for the final time to the three shepherd children in Portugal, and God allowed her to perform a miracle that changed the world.

It has been on my heart for some time to share a little information about the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Fatima.

In 1917, during World War I, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the shepherd children — Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto 🐑 — near the town of Fatima, Portugal. The apparitions began on May 13, 1917, and continued once a month for six months, always on the 13th day.

Through her visits, Mary entrusted the children with urgent messages: 

🙏 To pray the Rosary daily for peace in the world ☮️ 

🙏 To offer sacrifices for the conversion of sinners ✝️ 

🙏 To spread devotion to her Immaculate Heart 💗

She also revealed prophetic warnings, including the rise of communism, persecution of the Church, and the need for consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart.

The children faced skepticism and disbelief. Even their families were often reluctant or fearful, not understanding the visions. And while the girls could see and hear the Beautiful Lady speak to them, Francisco could only see the Beautiful Lady but not hear her words. The girls were able to relay to Francisco much of what the Blessed Virgin told them.

Though many doubted the children at first, tens of thousands gathered with them in Fatima on October 13, 1917 for the final apparition. That day, Our Lady promised a great sign, so people would believe. What followed became known as the Miracle of the Sun ☀️, or the Day the Sun Danced.

Witnessed by over 70,000 people — including skeptics, journalists, and believers — the sun appeared to spin, tremble, and dance in the sky 🌈. At one point, it seemed to plunge toward the earth before returning to its place. All the torrential rain dried up, and many present reported miraculous healings and conversions.

The Church officially approved the Fatima apparitions in 1930. Today, the message of Fatima continues to inspire millions to: pray, repent, and trust in God’s mercy through the loving intercession of Mary.
