For Carol, music has never been just sound. It is prayer, joy, and connection—an invisible thread weaving hearts together through rhythm and grace.

Small in Stature but Huge in Heart

At just 4'11", Carol Legaspi may not always be seen when seated behind the piano at St. John the Evangelist—but she is certainly felt. And when she rises to play the keyboards, standing among her towering bandmates, her presence becomes unmistakable. Small in stature but never quiet, Carol leads with confidence, energy, and heart, directing the band and guiding worship with passion and purpose. As Music Director for the past year, and in collaboration with the Liturgical Ministry, she has helped shape the beautiful, faith-filled music that enriches our Masses and parish events.

Did you know Carol used to play keyboards BAREFOOT during Mass? For more information about this and other unique aspects of her life, make sure to read to the very end!

When did this all begin?

Carol’s journey has always been guided by both discipline and devotion. As a young girl, her world was filled with melodies and metronomes, though her musical beginnings were humble. When she first started piano lessons, her family did not yet own a piano. Determined to practice and improve, Carol spent an entire year going to a neighbor’s house each day just to rehearse her lessons before her family was finally able to purchase their own instrument. That early dedication and perseverance became the foundation of the musician she would later become.

Her love for music continued to grow throughout her school years, where she also served as pianist and accompanist for her Catholic high school choir, deepening both her musical skill and her connection to sacred music and worship.

The University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music eventually became her second home, where she refined her artistry at the piano under the high ceilings of concert halls and on the prestigious stages of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Manila Film Center. Yet even as she pursued music with unwavering dedication, another calling steadily grew within her—the desire to heal and care for others.

Medicine Mixed with Music

Growing up in Manila, she was surrounded not only by music but also by medicine. Coming from a family of physicians—including her father, two brothers, and sister—she was raised in an environment where both excellence and service to others were deeply valued.

Choosing medicine did not dim her love for music; instead, it deepened her appreciation for harmony in all aspects of life. After earning her Doctor of Medicine degree, she continued to nurture her passion for music while carrying its discipline, creativity, and balance into every part of her life. After a brief period of medical practice, she immigrated to the United States, where she married her classmate from medical school, raised three children—which she is still doing—and successfully managed her own healthcare business.

Finding Her Home

When Carol and her family settled in St. John in 2012, she found herself surrounded by a new community and new possibilities. The introduction to band playing in 2013 ignited an exciting new chapter in her musical life—one that blended her classical training with the dynamic world of synthesis, digital keyboards, and live performance. What began as exploration soon became a vibrant creative awakening, expanding her artistry across genres.

One of the most defining moments in her musical journey came in 2018, when she was selected as one of only 24 keyboardists worldwide to participate in a keyboard training program led by renowned musicians including Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater and Tom Brislin of Kansas, among others. The experience became far more than advanced musical instruction; it was a period of profound personal and artistic renewal. Through those immersive days of learning and collaboration, Carol rediscovered her confidence and deepened the joy and passion that continue to shape her music today.

But it seems Carol’s most beautiful work is not found in competitions, performances, or accolades. It is in the faces of the parish partners she inspires every week at SJE and the musicians whose talents she has encouraged.

SJE Music Ministry

Carol first joined the SJE Music Ministry in August 2017 as a keyboardist, later serving as both grand pianist and keyboardist in 2022, before being appointed Music Director in May 2025. Since stepping into this leadership role, she has transformed and revitalized the ministry with vision, creativity, and dedication. Under her leadership, the ministry has more than doubled in size, welcomed a wider diversity of musicians and musical styles, modernized its stage and audio systems, refreshed its repertoire, and strengthened parish music productions and events. She has built a stage where every song is an offering, every rehearsal a fellowship, and every performance a celebration of the divine.

Drawing upon her many talents, natural leadership, and exceptional organizational skills, Carol has inspired musicians to grow not only in musical excellence but also in faith, confidence, and community. She encourages each member to discover their unique voice, embrace their gifts, and offer them in praise of Our Lord with sincerity and joy.

For Carol, music’s greatest power is not found in performance alone, but in participation—in bringing people together, lifting hearts in worship, and creating space for others to grow. Whether directing the band from behind the keyboards or leading rehearsals with energy and encouragement, she does more than make music. She inspires purpose, draws out courage, and awakens faith through every note and every shared moment of song.

Who is this Dynamo, really?

Those who meet Carol often describe her as radiant—a woman whose smile lights the room and whose words lift others higher. She never stops asking, “Do you sing? Do you play an instrument?”—a reflection of her ongoing passion for discovering and nurturing new talent in the service of worship.

Carol Legaspi’s story is one of brilliance tempered by humility, excellence rooted in service, and art guided by heart. Her life reminds us that talent, when shared with love, becomes something sacred. And as she continues to play—whether before a congregation or in the stillness of her own home—the echo of her music carries a simple, enduring truth: that when passion meets faith, the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and the world shines a little brighter.

Carol used to play the keyboard barefoot at SJE. During gigs and rehearsals, she would even bring a yoga mat to stand on while playing—it simply felt more comfortable and natural for her. However, over time, she adapted and became just as comfortable performing with shoes on.

Did you know she even formed her own rock band called Barefoot Charlie? With a name like that, it suited her perfectly, and the band went on to perform at festivals, entertainment venues, and private events. At the same time, she remained active in sacred music, accompanying the Cathedral Filipino Singers at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago for major performances, including Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Now, you’ve met Carol Legaspi. Feel free to introduce yourself!
