The Solemnity of Corpus Christi: Walking with Christ in the Eucharist

What should Catholics know about Corpus Christi?

  1. Corpus Christ is Latin for "Body of Christ.”

  2. It is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ and is a major feast day dedicated entirely to honoring the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist — the consecrated bread and wine truly become Jesus' body, blood, soul, and divinity.

  3. Corpus Christi is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday (the Thursday following Pentecost and 60 days after Easter). However, in the US, the liturgical observance has been moved to the following Sunday to allow more of the faithful to attend — which is Sunday, June 7 this year!

  4. Corpus Christi is a specialized feast dedicated entirely to adoring, thanking, and publicly honoring the Eucharist, which is why parishes often have processions.

  5. This year instead of having a procession after Mass at SJE, we are inviting all parish partners to participate in the Friday, June 12 walk with the Diocese of Gary.

Join Bishop Robert J. McClory as we dedicate our diocese to the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

Friday, June 12, 2026:

5 p.m.: Eucharistic Procession, starting at St. Matthias, 101 W Burrell Drive, Crown Point and heading to Bulldog Park.

6 p.m.: Dedication Service at Bulldog Park, 183 S West St, Crown Point.

Praise and worship music to follow.

Food trucks will be on site for purchasing dinner.

All are encouraged to attend! Transportation will be provided from Bulldog Park back to St. Matthias.

More information and details to sign up can be found here: https://dcgary.org/dedication

And why do we walk?

We hold Eucharistic Processions on the Feast of Corpus Christi to publicly testify to the Catholic belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Unlike the quiet reverence of a church, these processions take Christ "into the streets" to show that God is present in everyday life and to bless the surrounding community.

Public Witness: It is a bold, communal profession of faith, signaling that belief is not just a private matter but a living reality for the world to see.

The Pilgrim Church: Walking together symbolizes the "Pilgrim Church" — the idea that the faithful are on a journey through this life toward their eternal home, following Jesus "on the Way.”

Missionary Command: The act of carrying the Eucharist outside the church walls represents the mission to bring the Gospel to all people, fulfilling the command to "carry Christ to the world."

A call to Adore

Did you know we have a Perpetual Adoration Chapel right here on our parish grounds?

Nestled on the southwest corner of Wicker Ave (US 41) and 93rd Ave, our unique log-cabin chapel is open 24/7, offering a peaceful sanctuary to encounter the Real Presence of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. Jesus is truly present — Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity — under the appearance of bread.

This personal encounter is a cornerstone of Catholic life, fostering a deeper spiritual connection and a profound experience of His love. Spending time in Adoration is truly a "life decision you will never regret."

We invite you to visit Jesus in His home and consider committing to a specific hour. We are always in need of committed adorers and reliable substitutes. We use the We Adore Him platform to manage all scheduling. Even if you can’t commit to a weekly hour, joining our sub list is a vital service that ensures the Chapel remains open.

You will never regret the time you give to Him!
